As the Southern Hemisphere transitions into autumn, the Autumn Equinox (around March 20-23) marks a time of balance—when day and night are equal in length before the darker half of the year begins. This seasonal shift invites us to slow down, reflect, and align with nature's rhythm. We have been discussing in depth the transition to Aumtumn in our yoga classes recently, read below for more tips for the change of season.
The Wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, autumn is governed by the Metal Element associated with the lungs and large intestine—organs connected to breathing, grief, and letting go. Just as trees release their leaves, this is the time to shed emotional or physical burdens that no longer serve us.
TCM Tips for Autumn Wellness:
Strengthen the Lungs: Breathe deeply and enjoy warm herbal teas with ginger and honey.
Eat Warming Foods: Focus on cooked root vegetables, soups, and warming spices like cinnamon.
Support Emotional Release: Practice journaling or breathwork to process emotions.
Ayurveda's Take on Autumn
Ayurveda, the ancient Indian health system, views autumn as a Vata season—cool, dry, and windy. Vata governs movement and change, and excess 'Vata' can lead to feelings of anxiety, restlessness, or dryness in the body.
Ayurvedic Tips for Autumn Balance:
Stay Grounded: Stick to a steady routine, practice slow flow, yin, restorative yoga, and meditate and journal.
Nourish with Healthy Fats: Incorporate warming oils, ghee, and nuts to combat dryness.
Self-Care Rituals: Try an abhyanga (self-massage) with warm sesame oil to soothe the nervous system.
A Time for Reflection & Ritual
The equinox is a moment of pause, encouraging us to embrace both light and dark within ourselves. Consider celebrating with a simple ritual:
Light a candle and set an intention for the season ahead.
Spend time in nature, embracing the crisp air and golden hues.
Express gratitude for what has served you and let go of what no longer aligns.
As we move towards the cooler months, aligning with these ancient wellness traditions can help us stay physically and emotionally balanced. May this equinox bring harmony, clarity, and renewal into your life.
